Midjourney V8 Alpha Now Available in Relax Mode for Standard Plans

Midjourney has made its most powerful image generation model significantly more accessible by rolling out V8 Alpha support in Relax Mode for all users on Standard plans and above. The move eliminates the need to spend precious fast GPU minutes when generating images with the company's latest and most capable model, effectively democratizing access to cutting-edge AI art generation for a broader segment of its paying user base.
Until now, V8 Alpha was restricted to Fast and Turbo modes, meaning users had to consume their monthly allocation of fast GPU time to experiment with the newest model. For Standard plan subscribers, who receive a limited pool of fast hours each month, this created a difficult tradeoff between exploring V8's capabilities and preserving compute time for other tasks. With Relax Mode support, users can now queue unlimited V8 Alpha generations at the cost of slightly longer wait times, removing that constraint entirely.
Alongside the Relax Mode expansion, Midjourney has introduced a new --hd flag that enables native 2K resolution output directly from the generation pipeline. This represents a significant quality improvement over previous upscaling workflows, which relied on post-processing to achieve higher resolutions. Native 2K generation means sharper details, more coherent textures, and fewer artifacts compared to images that are upscaled after the fact.
Performance improvements are also a major part of this update. Style references, known as SREFs, and Moodboards now process approximately four times faster than before. For users who rely heavily on style-consistent outputs across multiple generations, this speed boost translates into a substantially more efficient creative workflow. The improvement suggests Midjourney has made meaningful optimizations to how its infrastructure handles reference-based conditioning.
The timing of these changes appears strategic. By lowering the barrier to V8 Alpha access, Midjourney is positioning itself to gather broader usage data and feedback ahead of the anticipated V8.1 release, which the company has indicated is coming soon. More users generating images with the current alpha means more edge cases discovered and more training signal for refinements in the next iteration.
The decision to open Relax Mode for V8 Alpha also reflects the intensifying competition in the AI image generation space. With rivals like Black Forest Labs, Stability AI, and OpenAI continuing to push their own models forward, Midjourney's move to make its best technology available to mid-tier subscribers sends a clear signal about where the company sees value: not in gatekeeping its most advanced capabilities, but in building the largest possible engaged user base around them.
For the millions of creators, designers, and hobbyists who use Midjourney daily, the practical impact is straightforward. The best model is no longer a premium-only experience measured in fast minutes. It is now something that can be explored freely, at native 2K quality, with faster style tools, and with a clear upgrade path on the horizon when V8.1 arrives.
