Pasqal's AEPONYX Acquisition Supercharges Quantum Computing Hardware Race

In a strategic move that reshapes the quantum computing landscape, Paris-based Pasqal has acquired Canadian photonics specialist AEPONYX. This acquisition positions Pasqal to accelerate development of fault-tolerant quantum computers by integrating advanced photonic integrated circuits directly into its neutral-atom quantum processors.
The deal brings together Pasqal's expertise in neutral-atom quantum computing with AEPONYX's specialized photonic chip technology. Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) provide the precise light control needed to manipulate quantum bits (qubits) with unprecedented accuracy and stability. This hardware integration addresses one of quantum computing's fundamental challenges: maintaining qubit coherence while scaling system complexity.
Pasqal CEO Loïc Henriet emphasized the strategic importance, stating that combining AEPONYX's photonics with Pasqal's neutral-atom architecture creates a competitive edge in scalability, qubit control, and hardware stability. The integration will replace delicate optical setups with chip-scale photonic circuits, dramatically increasing system robustness while enabling scaling from hundreds to thousands of qubits.
For AEPONYX, the acquisition represents a strategic pivot toward quantum applications. The Canadian company, founded in 2012 with $22 million in venture funding, brings a decade of photonics research and development to Pasqal's quantum roadmap. Their silicon nitride platform with MEMS integration has applications across telecom, datacom, and now quantum computing markets.
The timing coincides with quantum computing's transition from experimental proof-of-concept to practical processors. As Philippe Babin, AEPONYX CEO, noted, this partnership accelerates the leap toward building the foundation of a new computing era. The combined technology promises unmatched control fidelity and error resilience—critical requirements for fault-tolerant quantum systems that can detect and correct errors in real time.
Pasqal, founded in 2019 with backing from Nobel laureate Alain Aspect, has secured over €140 million in funding to date. The company's neutral-atom approach uses lasers to suspend atoms in space as qubits, offering exceptional coherence and accuracy. With this acquisition, Pasqal strengthens its position in the intensifying race toward practical quantum advantage.
