Target is bringing its shopping experience directly to ChatGPT users through a new integrated app, expanding its partnership with OpenAI. The beta launch, scheduled for next week, will allow consumers to browse products, build shopping baskets, and complete purchases through conversational interactions within the AI platform.
The integration represents a significant step in Target's broader strategy to embed artificial intelligence throughout its operations. The retailer has been using ChatGPT Enterprise across its headquarters, with 18,000 employees now accessing the AI tools for various business functions. This internal deployment has focused on streamlining operations and enhancing team productivity.
According to Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, Target exemplifies how enterprises are rapidly adopting AI transformation. "A big part of the AI transformation is happening inside enterprises, and Target is a great example of what that shift looks like when it's done with ambition and speed," Simo stated in the announcement.
The new ChatGPT app will enable users to request shopping assistance through natural language prompts. For example, customers can ask for help planning a family holiday movie night and receive curated suggestions for blankets, snacks, and other relevant products. The system supports building multi-item baskets and offers various fulfillment options including Drive Up, Order Pickup, and shipping.
Target executives emphasize meeting customers where they already spend time online. "At Target, everything starts with the guest, and that means meeting them wherever they are, including emerging spaces like ChatGPT," said Prat Vemana, executive vice president and chief information and product officer at Target.
Beyond customer-facing applications, Target has been leveraging AI for supply chain optimization, store process improvements, and personalized digital experiences. The company views these implementations as augmenting rather than simply automating services, aiming to free up employee time for more meaningful customer interactions.
The partnership reflects a broader industry trend where retailers are making AI intelligence central to both customer experiences and internal operations. As AI becomes more foundational across enterprises, collaborations like the Target-OpenAI relationship demonstrate how established companies can integrate emerging technologies to drive innovation.
Future updates to the ChatGPT integration will include Target Circle loyalty program linking and same-day delivery options, expanding the platform's capabilities as both companies continue developing their AI-driven retail solutions.
